Kentucky was named by her father, Curtis Perkins, after hearing Louisville poet Eric Cecil read from A-Train Blues. Cecil had said:
“If I ever have a daughter I might like to name her Kentucky.
She’ll grow up beautiful and misunderstood, sharp and forgiving,
she’ll know how to handle her losses,
and besides, I think Kentucky’s a right pretty name.”
Curtis agreed—and he named her not just for beauty, but to honor the home he almost lost in a fight with the Hillbilly Mafia. Naming her Kentucky was an act of defiance and legacy.
Kentucky grew up between Rattlesnake Ridge and Rooster Run, two small Appalachian communities carved into the wild hills of Kentucky.
She raises her boys tough and kind. Teaches them to pray, work, and never back down.
.
Kentucky holds down two jobs:
She works long hours, keeps the bills paid, and saves whatever she can. Her dream isn’t fame—it’s to buy back the lumber mill the Mafia snatched after Travis got sick.
Kentucky is a songwriter through and through. She writes country songs that sound like her life—honest, fierce, full of grit.

Kentucky Johnson isn’t just the protagonist of this story.
She is the story.
This ballad carries her name because everything comes back to her:
She doesn’t try to be a hero.
She’s not trying to fix the world.
But she stands her ground. And that might just save it.
She is the voice in the dark.
She is the fire in the kitchen.
She is the ballad.
And when the final note rings out, it will carry her name.
"The world can howl at my door—but I still sing.”
